What Counts as a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency can be seen as any sudden or extreme change to your oral health. The most common causes of dental emergencies are injuries, usually in the form of physical trauma involving your mouth.
However, it is important to note that this isn’t always the case. An underlying problem with our oral health can also prompt an unexpected change in our mouths that needs to be addressed right away.
Here are a few examples of the most common dental emergencies and how our team at Evolution Dental can fix them.
Knocked Out or Dislodged Tooth
From workplace accidents to sports-related injuries, dental trauma is fairly common and can result in a tooth being lost. If this happens, try to remain calm and do your best to find the missing tooth so we can reinsert it.
It is important not to touch the dislodged tooth by the root. Instead, gently grab the crown (top) of the tooth and if necessary, rinse it clean with water only. Then place the tooth in a safe place that also prevents it from drying out. A cup of water or folded in a damp cloth for example.
Then call our office right away. We will offer any additional information that can help preserve your natural tooth and schedule you for the earliest possible appointment.
Severe Toothaches / Dental Discomfort Lasting Over 24 Hours
There are many causes for toothaches, making them one of the most common issues for dentists to deal with. Anything from a bump to the chin to eating spicy foods can trigger a toothache.
However, a toothache can be considered a dental emergency under certain circumstances. If you are experiencing a toothache so painful that it is disrupting your day-to-day activities, that is considered an emergency. This is also true if a toothache lasts longer than 24 hours.
In either of these cases, it is a sign of a change to your oral health and needs to be addressed right away. Not only to get rid of any dental discomfort but to ensure there’s no additional harm to your oral health such as infection.
Cracked, Fractured, or Damaged Teeth
The enamel of our teeth is incredibly tough because it has the very important job of protecting the softer tissue of our mouths like our gums, dentin-pulp, and our tooth’s roots. That is why any time the enamel is compromised, it is considered a dental emergency.
Thankfully, our office is equipped with the latest technology to restore the integrity of your tooth, such as our dental bonding treatment. With it, we can offer a natural-looking repair to a broken tooth that takes only an hour to complete.
Dental Abscesses
Often appearing like a blister or pocket along the gums, a dental abscess is a serious sign of bacterial infection. Not only can this cause discomfort, but it can also cause swelling of your face and neck. Getting rid of a dental abscess needs to be done quickly to prevent the infection from spreading to other parts of your body.
If you notice a dental abscess, contact us right away. We will address the issue directly and assist with the underlying causes of the infection by treating damaged soft tissue or prescribing antibiotics.
Lost or Broken Dental Appliances
Restorative dentistry makes use of a variety of dental appliances that optimize your oral health. Filling, onlays, dental crowns, or dental bridges are some of the most common dental appliances due to their versatility.
If one of these becomes damaged or lost, it is considered a dental emergency because they are already offering extra protection and support to your oral health. Call our office right away and explain the issue so we can act quickly to repair any damage done to these restorative treatments.
How to Deal with a Broken Tooth
Before
After
Having a front tooth break is oftentimes more psychologically painful than physical pain. Dr Cast has been saving teeth for over 20 years with a technique he developed while he was a Clinical Instructor at the prestigious Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies (LVI).
- First find the broken piece of the tooth and put it in milk (preferably whole milk). Keep it refrigerated.
- Take Tylenol or Motrin for pain as directed on the package.
- Now call us to set an appointment. When you come to see Dr Cast, bring the broken tooth and milk in a baggie or jar.
Dr Cast has had significant success bonding the pieces back together. And almost always avoiding a root canal, bonding or a crown. In the event you cannot find the missing piece, rest assured Dr Cast has exceptional cosmetic dentistry training and can often bond the tooth.
